Good Oil band member - April 2009 to April 2011
Gavin Law
Trumpet/Saxophone
Gavin started playing trumpet aged 12 after an unspectacular effort on recorder. Initial training was via Royal Schools and a stern music teacher. The hours of practice and discipline required to be a concert performer soon confirmed to him that maybe it was better playing popular music. Memories from early years recall being dragged out of bed by a proud but a slightly inebriated father insisting he play with the well know Waikato entertainer - Johnny Corban who with other guests would arrive late and spend time singing and partying around the family piano.
Upon leaving high school he went immediately into rock groups. ‘Odessy’ was one of the more popular rock groups in Hamilton in the early 70’s with a repertoire that included music from well know groups Chicago & Blood Sweat & Tears. After this group were a number of local rock/dance bands. Included through these early years he played in Brass Bands, Operatic Show orchestras, Waikato Symphony and even studied for his ‘LRSM’.
In the mid 80’s he joined other well know Waikato musicians and formed Georgian Jazz Gentlemen, a trad group in the style of Kenny Ball & Acker Bilk. This group was resident at the Hamilton Jazz Society for many years, playing there and various gigs. including the Australian National Jazz Convention in 1987 & 1989, Jazz Festivals in Waitangi, Tauranga, Hamilton & Palmerston North.
Highlights of his music career to date include jamming on stage with Billy T & Howard Morrison at one of the Telethon’s in Hamilton, working with many of New Zealand popular artists and just having the opportunity to meet so many people who share a love of music.
‘Good Oil’ gives an opportunity to satisfy what he enjoys most- great people and easy listening music.
Come and listen!
